Action for school road safety campaign

School Safety with Lucy FrazerWe have launched the ‘Action for School Road Safety’ petition campaign to press for action and to hold the County Council to account. Pictured with Parliamentary Candidate Lucy Frazer, who has joined the campaign.

The campaign will have four key aims;
(1) Recruit a Primary School crossing person and put in place an actual crossing.
(2) Add the Primary School to a Safer Routes to School scheme.
(3) Return the Secondary School bus route (Landbeach to Cottenham) to the priority gritting route list.
(4) Ensure parents concerns about the quality/standard of County Secondary School buses are addressed.

As a District Councillor I am taking these County issues on in addition to my District duties for the good of the local community. Thank you to Sarah Smart for helping behind the scenes to get this campaign launched!

Rowing Lake news—S106 Agreement signed

Rowing Lake news—S106 Agreement signed

Construction of the Rowing Sports Lake between Waterbeach and Milton could now be taking a step closer to becoming a reality. The Section 106 contributions have now been agreed (a list of community and infrastructure contributions linked to the Rowing Lake). This includes that the area be open to the public, so we can enjoy the areas around the lake. There is also a requirement that a forum be set up involving councillors to make sure any community concerns about the Sports Lake can be raised.

The charity leading the project, Cambridge Sports Lake Trust are already doing a great job running Milton Country Park (which would be next to the Rowing lake). We will keep you posted as this project progresses.

Update on Waterbeach MOD Housing

Update on Waterbeach MOD Housing

At the end of the month 105 MOD properties will be transferred over to Annington Homes. These will then be refurbished for either rent or sale onto the open market around the Summer onwards. A second transfer of 77 properties will take place in July. After this a third transfer of the remaining empty properties on the estate will happen. A date for the third stage has yet to be confirmed.

There were serious security issues in January. Since then the MOD has put in place measures including security patrols and alarming of properties. This is in liaison with the Police who have also put in extra resource. Since then the situation has been much improved.

We are continuing to support the idea that South Cambridgeshire District Council acquires some of the MOD properties for Council housing as many local people are struggling to get onto the housing ladder.

MP joins James Hockney’s A10 Road Safety Campaign

MP joins James Hockney’s A10 Road Safety Campaign

We are pleased to report that Sir Jim Paice MP has joined the petition campaign launched by Cllr James Hockney to make the Waterbeach &
Landbeach (Slap-up) and the Milton to Landbeach junctions safer.

Thank you to all the hundreds of residents that have already signed the petition. Councillor James Hockney said, “We must see action. Last year we succeeded in the reduced 50mph limit on the A10. Now we must get these two junctions improved once and for all. I will press for action with the local community.”

Many of you have said that the junctions’ layouts are unclear and confusing. The petition calls for action and funding to improve the two junctions in consultation with the local community.

More affordable homes for Milton

More affordable homes for Milton

There will be 89 new homes being built on the former EDF site. Of those, 35 will be affordable housing. This is welcome news for the many local people trying to get on the housing ladder. There are also plans for recreation facilities on the site including two football pitches. Great news for our future sporting champions!

Cycle Parking at Waterbeach Station

Cycle Parking at Waterbeach Station

The push for more cycle parking facilities at the station has been recognised so hopefully we will see covered cycle sheds appear on the car park. Peter Johnson said, ”I hope this will encourage rail user with cycles to use this facility and stop them leaving cycles chained to the railings at Lodeside Caravan Park which has been a source of annoyance to Lodeside residents and will keep the area looking more tidy.”

MAINTAINING THE WATERBEACH/LANDBEACH TO ELY BUS SERVICE

MAINTAINING THE WATERBEACH/LANDBEACH TO ELY BUS SERVICE

Once again— Thank you to the 900+ residents that signed our petition in the shops & on the door step plus those of you that wrote, e-mailed and telephoned Stagecoach.

We now must make sure that the service is actively used as Stagecoach have raised concern over the usage figures / number of boarding’s. This was a successful community campaign for which everyone should be proud of. It does show that people power really can win the day.

Welcome news for area on Waterbeach empty MOD houses

Welcome news for area on Waterbeach empty MOD houses

We are pleased to report that Cllr James Hockney organised and chaired a multi-agency meeting at South Cambridgeshire District Council on February 7th about the empty MOD properties. This follows on from the meeting in November.

It has been confirmed that 105 MOD properties will be transferred over to Annington Homes at the end of March. These will then be refurbished for either rent or sale onto the open market around the summer of 2013 onwards. A second transfer of 77 properties will take place on July 24th. After this a third transfer of what will be the remaining empty properties on the estate will happen. A date for the third stage has not yet been confirmed.

It was also reported at the meeting that the MOD has put in place measures including security patrols. This is in liaison with the Police who have also put in extra resource.

So real progress is now being made as there are many local people who cannot afford to get onto the housing ladder.

The MOD plan to keep Park Crescent (the close located further up Bannold Road) and Orchard Drive (the houses inside the Barracks perimeter) to meet the remaining MOD housing need for the area.
