Graduating with a Bachelor in Laws

12167279_10153870956802150_1329650668_nDelighted to be able to say that I graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with a Bachelor of
Laws (Honours).

It has been an incredible three year journey! I have Learnt so much on the way and made many great friends.

So glad that a good friend gave me the nudge to take the step and study Law.Graduation

Very proud indeed to be the first person in my family to go to University.

Certainly the new skills and knowledge that I have learnt have been very useful in the political sphere and representing my community as District Councillor.

I have already taken the next step in the legal arena by having commenced my Postgraduate Law studies.

A big thank you to everyone for your support over the years!

£2,250 raised for good causes

12085180_10208174112134315_180031017_oDelighted that the charity event I organised at the family restaurant Bollywood Spice raised £2,250.

The ‘5th Anniversary Charity Gala Dinner’ money will be split between the three charities; Waterbeach Toddler Playgroup, Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and Addenbrookes Charitable Trust in aid of the Neonatal Intensive Care Baby Unit (SCBU/NICU).

A massive thank you to everyone who bought IMG_2193tickets, bought raffle tickets, bid on auction items, donated auction items, donated raffle items and those that could not attend making a donation.

When we started to arrange the event, we put out a community call for suggestions of charities to support. An incredible response was received with over 30 charities suggested and we supported the top three. IMG_2216

The event sold out in a week which was a great result and certainly gave us good cause to know this would be a special event. At all the previous charity events we raised £500-£1,300 – so this latest total was a new record!

This is a fantastic example of how generous the Waterbeach community is as always.

Localism in action

NP3I am delighted that South Cambridgeshire District Council agreed this morning to the Neighbourhood Plan for the full parish of Waterbeach.

The Planning Portfolio Holder (decision maker) Councillor Turner commented on the good number and passionate responses to the consultation from the local community plus the barrage of lobbying from myself (especially) and my fellow District Councillor.

I cannot underline the significance of Localism Act in 2011 bringing forward the Neighbourhood Plan concept for communities like ours.

It will mean for instance; more funding (an extra 10% of CIL money), have legal force over non strategic elements of the local plan and give us a much greater say in shaping our community in areas such as planning and transport.

This really is a good day for our village and I commend the Parish Council and residents for their efforts.

It also demonstrates joined up Government, with legislation being passed nationally that local government works together to bring forward for the good of local residents.

Next steps in ‘Action for School Road Safety’ campaign

lollipop3Update on the Waterbeach Ward ‘Action for School Road Safety’ campaign.

Thank you to the 1,330 people that have signed the petition. Residents who have not signed, there is still the online version on this website; www.jameshockney.com/action-for-school-road-safety/

Following the community success on the gritting of the Cottenham Village College bus route (Landbeach-Cottenham) we are now working with Cambridgeshire County Council to address the issue of the lack of a Primary School crossing person. We now have an up to date advert. This is being rolled out in poster format to local shops and the community noticeboards. I have e-mailed this advert for inclusion in the next Beach News. In addition to asking the Primary School Head Teacher to share the advert via the internal e-mail to parents and staff. Thank you to local resident Christine Taylor for helping with this.

The campaign has four aims. One has been achieved as mention and we are now working step by step to meet the other challenges remaining.

Snap shot of the Budget today

BudgetToday was the first Conservative budget in 18 years.

Here are some of the key announcements;

Growing the economy and getting the national finances under control with the national debt falling. So the the UK has a balanced plan to finish the job on the deficit and run a surplus – so our country lives within its means and we’re better prepared for whatever storms lie ahead.

Supporting working people with lower taxes. From next year the personal allowance will £11,000 before paying any income tax, so will boost the average taxpayers’ wages by £80 and taking 570,000 people out of tax all together. The 40p starting rate will be raised to £43,000, lifting 130,000 people out of this higher tax rate.

Cutting tax on business by reducing Corporation Tax to 18 per cent. The UK already has the lowest rate in the G20. Making us an attractive place to invest – creating jobs and business growth. The additional reduction will send out the message loud and clear that Britain is open for business.

Higher pay with a new National Living Wage. One of the most significant and landmark announcements is to introduce a new National Living Wage for all working people aged 25 and over. It will start next April at £7.20 an hour with a target to reach over £9 by 2020. It will mean two and a half million people get a direct pay rise. Those currently on the minimum wage will see their pay rise by over a third this Parliament, a cash increase for a full time worker of over £5,000. The Employment Allowance is being increased by 50 per cent so a firm will be able to employ four people full time on the new National Living Wage and pay no national insurance at all.

Taking the family home out of inheritance tax. Today there are more families pulled into the inheritance tax net than ever before. Our new residential allowance will mean you can pass up to £1 million on to your children inheritance tax free.

Strengthening the nation’s defences. The NATO pledge to spend 2 per cent of our national income on defence will be met – not just this year, but every year of this decade.

Putting welfare spending on a sustainable footing. Britain is home to 1 per cent of the world’s population; generates 4 per cent of the world’s economy; and yet pays out 7 per cent of all the welfare spending. Benefits will be capped at £23,000 in London and £20,000 outside London.

Tackling tax avoidance, evasion and aggressive tax planning. The package of measures put together finds the further £5 billion promised at the election and also tackling fundamental unfairness in the non-dom regime by abolishing the permanent non-dom tax status.

Improving the productivity of our economy. New Roads Fund – from the end of this decade, every single penny raised in Vehicle Excise Duty in England will go into that Fund to pay for the sustained investment our roads so badly need. This, alongside other measures to cut taxes for business, including an increased permanent Annual Investment Allowance at £200,000, will support business to invest and create more jobs.

The chancellor has said, “This Budget keeps us moving from a low wage, high tax, high welfare economy to a higher wage, lower tax and lower welfare society. It puts security first. The economic security of a country that lives within its means. The financial security of lower taxes and a new National Living Wage. The national security of a country that defends itself and its values. It is a big Budget for a country with big ambition”.

Law Degree – The ayes have it, the ayes have it!

Law booksAfter three years that seemed to have flown by, I can now say that I have passed my Law Degree with honours. Much of my studies took place in the Lord Ashcroft Building (pictured right). Before the General Election I had the pleasure of meeting Lord Ashcroft at an ARU talk.

Embarking on the Degree on has been one of the biggest challenges of my life – but on the
journey I have made so many great new friends which has greatly added to the experience.

One of the major reasons that led to me undertaking the Degree was the removal of Labour’s upfront tuition fees.

My family have been a great support – as the first in my family to go to University.

I will now enjoy some freedom away from being buried under law books whilst staring at a computer screen (which has been a feature of the last few months especially!) One of the proudest moments was completing my 10,000 word dissertation on human rights.

Whatever path I now follow; the skills, knowledge and experience that I have garnered will put to good use!

Charity event to support three good causes

Bollywood 5th Event A5 leaflet imageI am delighted to be organising a charity event on October 1st. The family restaurant Bollywood Spice will be celebrating it’s 5th anniversary with a Charity Gala Dinner in aid of three charities;
(1) Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
(2) Addenbrookes Charitable Trust – Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU) and Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).
(3) Waterbeach Toddler Playgroup.

These three charities came out of over 30 suggested charities by local residents. So are very worthy causes.

Tickets are £17.50 which includes a two course dinner with tea’s and coffee’s there after.

Profits from meal and all proceeds from raffle and auction will be split evenly between the three good causes.

Tickets for the night are available from me; to purchase your tickets simpy send a cheque made payable to ‘Bollywood Spice’ to 20 Levitt Lane, Waterbeach, Cambs, CB25 9AZ.

I am very much looking forward to the event!

Waterbeach Barracks 514 Squadron reunion

The former Waterbeach Barracks has a long and important history dating from the Second WB6World War, through the post war years as an RAF base and then as home to the Engineer Regiment from 1966 to 2013.

Today was the annual 514 Squadron reunion, held at the Waterbeach Military Heritage Museum. To be able to talk to the former servicemen was a humbling experience.

The 514 Squadron was based at Waterbeach Barracks from November 1943 through to August 1945. There motto was ‘Nil Obstare Potest’ – nothing can withstand.

WB8During that time they flew 3675 sorties on 218 bombing raids, dropped 14,650 tons of bombs. They played an active role in supporting the D-Day operations and thereafter, in October 1944 saw a peak of 386 sorties. The losses encountered were high with 426 aircrew and nine ground crew losing their lives whilst serving with the squadron. Especially when you consider that in April 1944 there were a total of 373 ground crew personnel and 291 aircrew personnel.

WB5When operations were completed in August 1945, it is sad to note that there was no formal recognition or events at the time to mark the disbanding of the Squadron.

As many of you know, the Waterbeach Barracks closed a few years ago. With Urban and Civic now managing the site some facilities are coming back into use. This includes the Museum (with about 5-10% of it collection on display). Since then a Trustee group has been working hard to fully re-open the Museum. The good
news is that this is coming to fruition with the Museum expected to be back in full operation later in the year.

The 514 Squadron website is certainly worth viewing to fully understand their contribution during the Second World War.

Campaigning in Tower Hamlets

Urmi and I really enjoyed catching up with many Conservative friends and groups likeCFOBIII
Conservative Friends of Bangladesh and Conservative Way Forward.  Considering that we had just had a General Election over 100 activists turning out to support Peter Golds was a great showing.

It is clear that the area needs a strong voice to stand up for the best interests of Tower Hamlets and it is clear that Peter Golds has a conviction and experience for the role.CFOBVI

He offers a platform featuring three key issues; Tackling mismanagement and corruption, Schools which prepare children for the future and No to over-development in Tower Hamlets.

Election day is fast looming and will await the result with interest later in the week.

First success for ‘Action for School Road Safety’ Campaign

I am delighted that we have already achieved one of the aims; to ensure that the School busSchool Safety with Lucy Frazer route is gritted on a priority basis.

This has been a great community achievement with parents and residents standing up and together we have held the County Council to account. Efforts have included media interviews, rolling the petition out into shops, petition sessions at the school, meetings, emails, FOI’s, telephone calls, promoting the campaign on social media, articles in local village publications and ‘In Touch’ newsletters.

But three issues remain and we will continue to press for the County Council to action these issues. Pictured rightOur local MP Lucy Frazer getting behind the campaign.

The campaign was launched after countless parents of primary and secondary schoolActionpetitionchildren in my community have contacted Cllr Hockney to raise their serious concerns. The aim of the petition campaign to press for action and to hold Cambridgeshire County Council to account.

Cllr Hockney has taken these County issues in addition to his District related
workload.

Pictured above: meeting parents and collecting signatures outside Waterbeach
School and below the petition in shops.

The campaign has four key aims;Petition image

(1) Recruit a Primary School crossing person and put in place an actual crossing.
(2) Add the Primary School to a Safer Routes to School scheme.
(3) Return the Secondary School bus route (Landbeach to Cottenham) to the priority gritting route list. Achieved!
(4) Ensure parents concerns about the quality/standard of County Secondary School buses are addressed.

We now have over 1,200 signatures which shows the strong feeling on the issue.
