Completing 2nd year of Law Degree
So pleased to say that I have successfully completed the second year of my Law Degree at ARU Cambridge. May has certainly proved to be a very busy month of assignments which included; moot (mock court case), three written assignments (6,800 words) and an exam. This was in addition to working hard on the campaign trail.
Many has criticised the new funding system for University students. I can say with confidence that if it were not for the new system which ended Labour’s up front fees I would not have undertaken the degree. Being the first person ever in my family to be undertaking a degree makes me immensely proud.
Children’s Hospice Fundraiser – over £600 raised
I was delighted to organise a Charity fundraiser lunch at Bollywood Spice Waterbeach in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.
Karen Newton EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser says “I am delighted that the charity lunch at Bollywood Spice was so successful and would like to thank Cllr James Hockney and the proprietors of Bollywood Spice for organising such a wonderful event. The money raised could fund two in-house Day Care sessions in our Milton Hospice (lasting 16 hours) enabling the child to meet other children or young people facing similar challenges, allowing siblings to have some “special time” with their family, or providing the parents with the opportunity to spend time with their sick child without the responsibility of 24-hour care.”

Securing the future of Landbeach Tithe Barn
At the weekend I was delighted to attend the open day of the Landbeach Tithe Barn. There was a good turnout with many wanting to help secure the future of the building. I am pictured with the Chairman of Landbeach Society, Robert Stripe.
Already I have been taking action to help this worthy cause. In October I chaired a meeting with representatives from the Landbeach Society, Landbeach Parish Council, Denny Abbey Farm Museum and Cambridge Past Present and Future about the ithe Barn. In May and October I put forward the case to the South Cambs District Council (who own the building) Portfolio Holders meeting to give the community more time. I was pleased that this call was heeded. The next meeting will be in March.
Tithe Barn’s are now quite rare in the UK. I have heard 90% of them have been converted. Only 190 remain, with Landbeach the only example in the whole of Cambridgeshire. It is also unique, being that it still has the original floor in place.
Currently the Tithe Barn is in need of a roof repair that would cost £30,000 – which is not an insignificant sum. Different options were discussed. One way could be if the Tithe Barn was opened on a regular basis then grant applications could be possible. Already an anonymous donor has stepped forward with a generous donation.
It would be great if we can secure the future of this wonderful building for future generations. Especially as in 2027 it will be 500 years old.
A short time ago at a Film Studio a reasonable distance away
I was delighted to go to the Local Government Association Culture, Tourism and Sport Board meeting today.
This was held at Elstree Studios, where films like; Star Wars, Indiana Jones and The Kings Speech were filmed. Elstree has a long history, including the first UK talking film – Hitchcock’s Blackmail. Although the studio closed and became derelict in 1996. Thankfully the local council came to the rescue taking control of the site and putting in vital investment. Since then the Studio has gone from strength to strength being used for many films and television productions. So much so, that the local council receives a rental income of over £1 million pounds per year – which can be spent on local services. This is likely to 
increase further when four acres of unused land is put to use. The studio also provides 800 jobs and the economic benefit to all the local shops and businesses during filming.
It really did bring home to me the important work that the LGA CT&S Board does to help vital industries like this. Thank you to Elstree Studios for the tour and hosting us today. I am pictured with Cllr Morris Bright, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Elstree Studios.
