Wonderful Open Day visit to Enfield Mosque

I was delighted to attend and meet the team at Enfield Mosque (Ponders End) whilst they were holding the Explore Islam Exhibition over the course of two days at the weekend. I attended on the afternoon of the second day and I was made to feel very welcome.

They had such an impressive and wide range of displays and exhibition boards that it took a couple of hours to get round, but at all times there was someone on hand to answer any questions.

Enfield has a wide range of communities and it is wonderful to celebrate and embrace this diversity.

Eid Mubarak to all my Muslim friends

images (5)I would like to wish all my Muslim friends a very happy Eid.

Today is the end of Ramadan. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset which includes refraining from eating, drinking and smoking . This is a major commitment in the summer with the fast lasting from early morning through to the evening, as late as 9.30pm.

Muslims use the term  Eid Mubarak after performing the Eid prayer. The celebration continues until the end of the day for Eid ul-Fitr (or al-Fitr) and can continue a further three days.

Today I am celebrating the joy of the day with family – it is a wonderful opportunity for a celebration with great food and drink. Eid Mubarak!

Celebrating 10 years of service to the community

10-Year-AnniversaryIt does not seem possible, but yes, I have now been District Councillor for Waterbeach Ward; Waterbeach, Landbeach and Chittering for 10 years.

I have to say I am enjoying now as much as I did on day one. Many people ask me me why I became/are a Councillor. For me I see being a Councillor as a tool – it is an effective way to get change, make a difference  and put something back into society.

It has been a real privilege to serve the community over the last ten balloonsyears, successfully showing leadership by taking on hundreds of pieces of casework and launching countless campaigns on the key local issues.

Thank you to everyone that has worked with me and has supported me on this journey.

Landbeach Village Tea Party

WP_004684Went along today with my girlfriend and Mum. We had a wonderful afternoon at the Landbeach Village Tea Party. Today the weather was nice and warm, just as it was a the previous event two years ago. Was great to catch up with so many local residents. Well done to everyone involved in organising this event.

Emmaus Landbeach Charity Sale

WP_004528Was pleased to attend the Emmaus Landbeach charity sale on Saturday.

The local community fully supports this worthy cause. Emmaus Cambridge was the first Community to have started in the UK over 20 years ago. There are now many communities across the UK helping homeless people start a new life.

The companions work hard with the staff to ensure the community is fully self supporting. They collect, refurbish and sell furniture and other household goods. There are now thirty companions.

Each time I visit, I have seen the community develop and grow which is fantastic to see. Bought some ties as pictured!

Ely Cathedral Flower Festival

WP_004540I was delighted to go with my girlfriend to the Ely Cathedral Flower Festival. http://www.elycathedral.org/flower_festival/. There was a great turnout. Which I am not surprised as the number and quality of the displays had to been seen to be believed. I spoke with many people at the event and everyone seemed to really enjoy all the creativity in the majestic Ely Cathedral. I was so impressed that I upgraded my annual pass to become a ‘Friend’ of Ely Cathedral on the day. Well done to all involved, I am so pleased that I went!
